Collection Jacques et Claude Rohault de Fleury 23 October 2020 • 3:00 PM CEST • Paris

I t was with an elegant Parisian touch that Claude and Jacques Rohault de Fleury assembled an eclectic and highly sophisticated collection in their beautiful home in Neuilly.

Upon entering, visitors discovered an enchanting collection of miniatures from North India, Deccan and Safavid Iran surrounding the central staircase. Moving through the beautifully decorated residence a fabulous collection of works by Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita blended with views of the South of France by renowned painters such as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Signac and Charles Camoin.

Beautiful decorative objects adorned the many rooms: rock crystal and gold obelisks, ducks and a heron by Boucheron, a Nawhal tusk and fantastical ceramic cats by Emile Gallé. The walls featured another wide variety of artists: pastels by Lucien Levy-Dhurmer, watercolors by Salvador Dalí, views of Montmartre by Utrillo and a rare oil portrait by Camille Claudel.

At the crossroads of the fine and decorative arts these exquisite objects, paintings, drawings and sculpture, carefully gathered together over the years, create a compelling and seductive coherence that will appeal to collectors.

Featured Lots

Léonard Foujita, "Petit écolier en blouse noire", 1918
Painted in 1918, Petit Ecolier en blouse noire is a rare early masterpiece by Foujita. During the summer of 1918, he travelled to the South of France, staying in a village with Modigliani, Soutine and Zborowski. Possibly inspired by one of the young children of the village, the work is painted on a yellow background that clearly refers to the gold leaf technique that he often used.

Pierre Bonnard, "Maison du peintre au Cannet (...)", v. 1942,
Jacques and Claude Rohault de Fleury loved the Mediterranean. Among watercolours by Signac, works by Camoin and Dunoyer de Segonzac, the Maison du peintre au Cannet painted by Pierre Bonnard circa 1942 embodies the fascination with the light of the South of France. In this work, Bonnard has fully mastered the blending of color, light and landscape, creating an almost abstract composition that attests to his highly refined aesthetic vocabulary.

Edouard Vuillard, "Le petit modèle au chapeau bulgare", 1912-13
Le Petit modèle au chapeau bulgare possesses all the refinement and lightness typical of 18-century pastels. This was a technique that Vuillard excelled in. In this work, Vuillard excels in rendering the intimate Belle-Epoque portrait of a young woman. The flattened, subtle composition articulated around the interplay between the various planes is reminiscent of his finest Nabi works.

Indian Miniatures

Jacques and Claude Rohault de Fleury’s Collection features a group of around sixty Indian miniatures dating from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century.

Their brightly coloured pigments are remarkable, and they feature lively compositions. Several schools are represented, mainly the Rajput School from North of India. Each school has their own stylistic characteristics. Some scenes are taken from epics such as the Rāmāyana: "The Route of Rāma", and Mahābhārata: Life of Krishna, but also equestrian portraits of dignitaries parading or hunting and courtly scenes.
