Master Paintings 20 May 2021 • 10:00 AM EDT • New York

T his Spring’s live Master Paintings auction features a variety of works by Western European artists that span centuries of diverse subject matter and price points. We are thrilled to present an exquisite group from the collection of Mrs. John L. Marion that includes masterful large-scale works by the greatest still life and bird painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as Jakob Bogdány and Melchior d’Hondecoeter. Jan Both’s beautifully rendered Italianate landscape and a signed and dated still life by Edward Collier also headline the sale’s robust Dutch and Flemish offerings.

The sale’s exciting Italian section features four works from The Martello Collection, including an intimate Madonna and Child by Giovanni Francesco Caroto. Other highlights from the Italian section include a detailed portrait of a well-dressed lady in black by Alessandro Allori, a number of Renaissance pictures from a distinguished private collection including a gem-like gold ground by Giovanni di Paolo, and an impressive group of paintings sold to benefit the San Diego Museum of Art Acquisition Fund including portraits by Alessandro Mattia da Farnese, Bernardino Licinio, and a Roman artist active in the ambit of the young Caravaggio.

The sale also includes a marine townscape of The Hongs at Canton by Thomas Daniell, a strong French section led by Hubert Robert’s depiction of an Italian countryside, and three diverse works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.

The late Anne Marion was a Texan legend and a passionate champion of the arts – trailblazing in the realms of collecting, philanthropy and patronage. Her unique collection represents a varied and fascinating journey through modern American art history. Her diverse and high quality collection is punctuated by a curiosity and interest in large scale works by many of the greatest still-life and bird painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her Palm Desert home was beautifully and entirely decorated with this intriguing genre of paintings.

We are pleased to present two important groups of Italian Renaissance paintings from distinguished private collections, including four works from The Martello Collection.
