The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation, 119 West 23rd Street, Suite 400, New York, NY 10011, 212-562-4024, karen@thomasartconservation.com ,an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in very good condition overall. The paint layer are very well preserved, with only a few insignificant losses (restored). For the most part, restoration knits together thinness in the shadows of the garments that appears to be due to age-related fading of the red lake pigment. Small touches of restoration are located in the beard, and in a few tiny losses in the face and around the edges of the panel. The varnish is even although a bit dull. The vertically grained panel is structurally sound and displays a very mild convex lateral curvature. Wood worm exit holes are visible. The non-original tabernacle frame is in sound condition, with a normal degree of wear. This painting may be displayed in its current state, although cleaning and a new restoration would brighten the picture and help the garments read better.
