The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.

The first painting: This work is in very good condition overall. It seems to be made from two pieces of canvas joined horizontally through the center. The canvas is lined. The paint layer is stable. Careful retouches have been applied to slight weakness in the darker and more thinly applied colors. There is a restored diagonal break of about 3 inches in the center of the white fowl in the lower right. This is an isolated damage. There is some visible thinness in the feathers of the wing of the peacock in the upper center. The retouches are well applied, and the work should be hung in its current state.

The second painting: This large work is in very good condition overall. The canvas has a lining which is nicely stabilizing the paint layer. Retouches have been very accurately applied to cracking in a few areas, and to some weakness in the darkest colors. The sky has attracted retouches to some cracks and slight abrasion. The retouching is well applied, and the work should be hung in its current state.
