Game piece with a yellow hammer and house sparrow

signed lower left: Jhuygens (Jh in ligature)

oil on panel

panel: 9 by 6 ½ in.; 22.9 by 16.5 cm.

framed: 15 ¼ by 13 ¼ in.; 38.7 by 33.7 cm.

The panel consists of a single plank that is flat, stable, and beveled on all 4 edges of the reverse. The image reads very well beneath the varnish with textural details retained. A few pin dots of discolored retouching are visible on the right edge and at upper left, but are not distracting, and no other retouching or repairs are visible. A thin web of craquelure is visible but it is stable. Under UV inspection, the aforementioned dots of retouching are visible, as well as some strengthening in the dark underside of the leftmost wing and in the yellow hammer's chest. The retouching has been well applied and the painting is in very good condition. Offered in a simply carved ebonized wood frame with two-layer gilt inner liner.
