Adoration of the Magi

oil on canvas

canvas: 22 ⅛ by 29 ⅛ in.; 56.2 by 74 cm.

framed: 29 ⅛ by 35 ⅛ in.; 74 by 89.2 cm.

The canvas is thinly lined and is stable on its stretcher. The painting has not been recently restored. The overall image reads relatively well beneath an old, dirtied, and dulled varnish. Some of the brushwork and coloration is still well preserved, including some impasto, for example in the figures and the page kneeling in the lower foreground, as well as in parts of the Holy Family, among others. Some old scattered small spots of restoration have somewhat discolored and are visible to the naked eye, including in the figure of Christ and Mary, as well as in the upper left background. There is a thin seam that runs near the upper edge, and two small spots of loss in the lower right corner. Inspection under UV reveals a thick varnish that impedes some inspection. The aforementioned small spots of retouching fluoresce here and there throughout, as do some strokes of strengthening in the shadows of the figures at lower left. Some additional spots in the face of the man holding the reigns of the camel, in the heads of the putti at upper center, and a few fine strokes in the Holy Family. Offered in a carved giltwood frame with some losses, including the right edge of the liner.
