Overview

Sales of historic, important, single-owner collections have been a part of Sotheby’s auction tradition since its earliest years. Noted milestones include the sale of Napoleon’s famed library in 1893 and the sale in Kinmel Park in Wales in 1929, the first modern-day house sale, in which the sale is conducted at the residence where the collection is housed. Legendary sales include the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Grand Ducal Collections of the Margrave of Baden, while the estates of Gunther Sachs and Brooke Astor are two more recent successes.
