British Studio Ceramics

Sotheby’s is delighted to present works by some of the most renowned British ceramicists and potters from throughout the twentieth century to the present day. Spanning from Bernard Leach and his early pioneering designs such as Fish Vase, Lucie Rie’s tableware sets, and to the work of practicing contemporary artists such as Jennifer Lee and Rupert Spira, Made in Britain continues its legacy in including some of the finest examples of studio ceramics on the market today. This sale includes a group of works by Rie and a Shoji Hamada vase from the family of Sir Ove Arup, an avid collector and patron of many of ceramicists from an early stage in their careers.

From Yousuf Karsh’s iconic 1941 portrait of Sir Winston Churchill and Iain MacMillan’s unforgettable shot of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road, to Corinne Day’s early images of Kate Moss, this September’s Made in Britain auction includes timeless portraits of some of Britain’s most beloved personalities.
