We are grateful to The Patrick Heron Trust for their kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work. The Trust is preparing the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the Artist's work and would like to hear from owners of any works by Patrick Heron, so that these can be included in this comprehensive catalogue. Please write to The Patrick Heron Trust c/o Sotheby's Modern & Post-War British Art, Sotheby's, 34-35 New Bond Street, London, W1A 2AA.

The sheet is attached to its support with intermittent tabs of adhesive. The right edge is cut while the other edges are deckled. Overall the work appears to be in generally very good condition.

The sheet cockles slightly. There appears to be a faint diagonal surface abrasion in the pink pigments near the centre of the upper edge. There is a raised spot of paint with some minute craquelure in the centre pink background of the work, and a couple of very minor areas of craquelure in the pink background along the left side of the lower edge, only visible upon close inspection. There are a couple of uneven, slightly raised spots in keeping with the Artist's medium.

The work is presented in a white painted wooden frame held under glass.

Please email tamsin.goldingyee@sothebys.com if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Gifted by the Artist to Denis Mitchell on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 1992, and thence by descent to the present owner

Patrick Heron and Denis Mitchell first met before the war in Balnoon, St. Ives and remained life-long friends. Heron would often drop into Mitchell's studio over the years and in 1992 bore testament to this bond in his tribute to Denis at the opening of his friend's new exhibition at the Penwith Gallery.

The inscription on a label attached to the reverse of the work reinforces their close comradery, not just as artists but as friends.
