  Hockney-Van Gogh

  At the Van Gogh Museum, the exhibition Hockney-Van Gogh compels museum-goers to meditate on the pastoral landscapes of David Hockney and Vincent van Gogh. Citing inspiration from van Gogh, Hockney has recently turned to painting large-scale, bright canvases that depict the English countryside. With this showcase, viewers are able to consider van Gogh's influence on the contemporary artist, as well as the beauty of nature illuminated in both artists' oeuvres:

  Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice

  The Italian Renaissance painter Jacopo Tintoretto was born 500 years ago this year. Various events and exhibitions are planned around the world to mark the occasion; a noteworthy example is the National Gallery of Art's exhibition Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice, opening March 24th. Tintoretto seeks to reevaluate the artist's contributions and place him alongside Titian and Veronese as one of the most significant Venetian Renaissance painters.

  Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads

  Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads at the Wallace Collection investigates Henry Moore's Helmet Head series in tandem with the armory holdings of the Wallace Collection, which served as the artist's primary inspiration. The works on display include sketches, drawings, maquettes and full-sized sculptures formed from bronze, lead and plaster. The Helmet Heads is a 2018 Sotheby's Prize commendation.

  Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light

  Spanish Impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla remains relatively unrecognized in art historical canon – especially when compared to fellow plein air modernists, such as Monet or Pissarro. The exhibition Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light at the National Gallery highlights the atmospheric quality of the artist's work; his mastery is immediately evident in Sewing the Sail, a canvas that exemplifies his striking depictions of light.

  Pipilotti Rist

  Denmark's Louisiana Museum is displaying the first exhibition in Scandinavia devoted to the works of contemporary Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. Pipilotti Rist will offer a comprehensive look at the artist's career – presenting a wide range of media, from large video installations to smaller televisual formats.

  The Cleveland Museum of Art's exhibition Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940–1950 examines the early work of 20th century African-American photographer Gordon Parks; formative years that Parks later considered to be fundamental to his artistic development. The exhibited photographs include some of his most well-known, such as Grain Boat taking on a load of wheat from 1945.

  Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style

  Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh championed the Glasgow Style, which was the only Art Nouveau movement to emerge in the United Kingdom. Mackintosh was one of 'The Four' – a group of four designers who were considered the founders of the aforementioned style. Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style, mounted at the Walker Art Gallery, features over 250 objects designed by Mackintosh and his compatriots.
