Exquisite mecca for Chinese antique furniture

Established in 2014, the Liang Yi Museum is located on Hong Kong’s historic Hollywood Road and is dedicated to design, craftsmanship and heritage. This private museum is Hong Kong’s largest, founded by investment banker Peter Fung to showcase his personal collection and named after his two daughters. Open by appointment only, the museum houses several notable collections, with its centerpiece the approximately 400 pieces of classical Chinese antique furniture — a world-class collection that includes items made of precious materials like huanghuali (a rare rosewood) and zitan (red sandalwood) from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, many of which were bought by Fung in the very antique shops that line the famed street. The museum also holds over 800 examples of European vanities, including bejeweled clutches, compacts and powder boxes made by leading designers such as Cartier, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels from the late 1880s through the 1960s. Other collections include Japanese art and design and Western silverware. Unlike the typical museum experience, most exhibits here can be touched, with visitors encouraged to sit on the furniture.
