Along with Liam Gillick, Tracey Emin, and Sarah Lucas, Hirst was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. “I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds,” he reflected. “Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Hirst was raised in Leeds. As a student at Goldsmiths College in London, his work caught the eye of the collector and gallerist Charles Saatchi, who became an early patron. Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)—a large vitrine containing an Australian tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde—was financed by Saatchi and helped to launch the artist’s career. Hirst went on to win the coveted Turner Prize in 1995. In 2012, he showed what went on to be one of his most controversial work in decades, the installation In and Out of Love, which consisted of two white windowless rooms in which over 9,000 butterflies flitted around and died. In 2015 Hirst opened the Newport Street Gallery in London, which grew from his long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. His works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami.

"One photo from the Open Door that night has since become a jazz icon. It shows Parker standing out front, wearing a light suit, two-toned loafers, his arms thrust forward, blowing what appears to be his famous King brass alto saxophone. To Parker's left is Monk on upright piano, microphone slung over the instrument. Two drinking glasses and a dinner plate perched on top. At Monk's right is Mingus, slouched over his bass. Along the back wall is Mr. Haynes, his eyes fixed on his bandmates [...] It has since been called by many 'the greatest photo in jazz.'" Robert Parent (1923-1987) was one of the pioneers of jazz photography. He combined a keen eye and appreciation for his subjects with a technical know-how that allowed him to capture images that eluded lesser practitioners. Determined not to disrupt performances, he developed a technique that became known as "available light photography," which allowed him to work in the dark environments of clubs and theaters. Using his Pressman Speed Graphic camera, Parent was able to quietly snap pictures without disturbing the performers, a technique on display in this iconic image. Parent had received a tip that Parker might be sitting in with Monk's trio, and his photos from that night (the only known of this event) capture the only time these four giants would play together. This photo would soon appear in LIFE, but over the decades has since gone on to legendary status, perfectly capturing the improvisational, intimate, and collaborative nature of jazz. It was most recently the subject of a 2019 New York Times article by Peter Facini entitled "Is This the Greatest Photo in Jazz History?" During his life, Parent's images appeared regularly in Downbeat and Metronome as well as more mainstream books and publications. He also provided images for numerous album covers (designing many himself) for labels like Mingus's Debut. His photos are among the most influential of postwar jazz, capturing it at the height of its cultural and artistic importance. A rare and defining photograph.

Warhol became the Velvet Underground’s manager in 1966 after seeing them perform in Greenwich Village and then brought German born singer Nico to the table. Warhol designed the cover as a self standing artwork and this is marked by Warhol’s very noticeable printed hand signature. In dissociating the concept of the artwork from the band itself and achieving wide distribution, Warhol created something revolutionary in nature. Says Warhol scholar Paul Marechal, “After sublimating an everyday object, he then reintroduced it into daily life through a vehicle accessible to all, the record. Perhaps Warhol wanted to be as well-known as Coca-Cola.” The original album cover allowed fans to peel back the banana skin as a sticker, revealing the fruit of a nude-colored banana underneath. The sexually-charged effect was challenging for manufacturers to first pull off (the time it took to perfect the peel was partly the reason the album’s original release was delayed), but MGM deemed it necessary, since Warhol’s visual presence opened unprecedented doors.

He got to know Jean-Michel’s paintings and started working with him in 1982 or ’83. There had been a suggestion of a collaboration between Warhol, Basquiat and Francesco Clemente. Then, Jean-Michel and Andy, very enthusiastically and seriously, went on to undertake a whole process of painting collaboratively at Warhol’s Factory for a year to a year and half, making somewhere between 70 and 80 large paintings that represented an extraordinary—and very rare in history—body of work. Their joint body of work represented a whole year and half of collaboration and production. It was not an overnight thing. The two artists worked together, one painting over the other, back and forth, and I immediately thought of two people sparring and boxing together, which is how I hit upon the idea of a boxing theme for the show’s advertisement."

The self-proclaimed “original NYC street photographer” used his bold personality and beat-up Minolta to get behind-the-scenes access to groups like the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, with whom he toured, and to such downtown artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, to name only a handful of his subjects. Publications, clothing, and lifestyle brands took notice of his intimate, candid color and black-and-white shots, and commissions for the New York Times and Puma, among many others, followed. From his base in Greenwich Village, Powell continues to roam the streets, documenting his city through the people who call it home. From a young age Haring enjoyed drawing, especially Disney characters and other cartoons. He initially wanted to become a commercial artist but after a year at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, Haring dropped, moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (SVA). Haring immediately felt connected to the thriving alternative arts scene happening downtown in the late 1970s and became friends with&nbsp;Jean-Michel Basquiat&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kenny Scharf. Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as&nbsp;Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of&nbsp;Jeff Koons,&nbsp;Yayoi Kusama,&nbsp;KAWS and&nbsp;Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the&nbsp;Crack is Wack&nbsp;mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century. Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical reproduction, Pop Art king, Andy Warhol created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images. Warhol was widely influenced by popular &amp; consumer culture, with this being evident in some of his most famous works: 32 Campbell's soup cans, Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe &amp; Mick Jagger, for example. Rejecting the standard painting and sculpting modes of his era, Warhol embraced silk-screen printmaking to achieve his characteristic hard edges and flat areas of color. The artist mentored Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and continues to influence contemporary art around the world: His most bold successors include Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons. Warhol has been the subject of exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou, among other institutions.
