19th Century Furniture & Sculpture

Upcoming Auctions

Sotheby’s 19th Century Furniture department offers a wide array of high quality decorative works of art, including: silver, ceramics, lightings, timepieces, sculpture and Viennese enamel cabinet objects. In addition to the world record price for any piece of 19th century furniture sold at auction, which was set by Sotheby’s in 2007 at $3.2 million, we hold several auction records in this category. In 2011 we achieved records for Francois Linke at $1.1 million and for any 19th century Italian micromosaic at $2 million.

We also offer haut luxe furniture manufactured after the reign of Louis Philippe (1830-48) and up to the Belle Époque period which emerged in Paris in the 1870s and continued until 1910. Many of the pieces we offer are characterised by revival styles, and are often exact copies of furniture created during the Age of Enlightenment, more accurately the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI and the First Empire period under Emperor Napoléon I. The department also offers 19th century creations known as the néo-styles, such as néo-Gothic, néo-Renaissance and néo-Grec, as well as Japonisme and Orientalist styles.

Our international team includes experts in New York, London and Paris as well as dedicated regional representatives in Buenos Aires. Sales take place twice each year in New York and single-owner sales are held as opportunities arise.
