Refining Taste: Works Selected by Danny Katz 20–27 May 2020 • 3:00 PM BST • London

O ne of the most original, charismatic and respected figures in the art world, Danny Katz has been dealing in sculpture and works of art for more than 50 years. He is also well known for his philanthropic commitments, both to the arts – fine arts, music and dance – as well as neurological charities. In the spirit of this, Danny has decided to donate the proceeds from 10 lots in the sale to two charities providing essential support for those most in need during the Covid-19 pandemic: Refuge and The Trussell Trust.

No other art dealer has been active at the highest level of the market across so many different categories. His interests embrace sculpture – the field in which his reputation was first established – as well as Ancient Art, Old Master and 19th Century Paintings, Modern British Art and Arts of the Islamic World. To all these areas Danny brings an encyclopedic knowledge and true passion for the objects he handles.

At this stage of his career, Danny has decided to shift his focus and spend his time handling a smaller number of important works of art, which has prompted him to select this carefully-curated group for sale at Sotheby's. The works included in the sale exemplify Danny's broad interests and provide an extraordinary opportunity for collectors to acquire works epitomizing his legendary taste.

Documenting the Art World

In 2014, Danny made a critically acclaimed three-part series of independent films on ‘British Art at War’. Presented by Andrew Graham-Dixon and broadcast on the BBC, they explored the lives of Paul Nash, Walter Sickert and David Bomberg, and their response to the cataclysm of the First World War. © Daniel Katz Ltd.

People & Portraits

Legendary for his interest in people, Danny possesses a genuine affection for their experiences and thoughts. He can often to be found in Sotheby’s restaurant, regaling friends, colleagues and the occasional stranger over coffee. It’s no surprise then that this collection features so many portraits, from (faux) Roman to Peter Blake; stern likenesses to caricatures; famous sitters to everyday ‘types’.

The Human Form

The sale reflects Danny's abiding interest in the human form, realized in stone, metal and terracotta – as well as on the canvas and page. His reputation as a dealer is founded on his knowledge of Renaissance European sculpture – a time when the body, male and female, was everything – a thing of beauty, a site of desire and a metaphor for all the virtues and vices of the world.

A Sense of Place

Danny is both intensely urban – very much at home in London’s chic enclaves of Holland Park and Mayfair – and a lover of the countryside, especially the rolling down-lands of southern England. He is a firm believer in the genius loci – and the visual artist’s particular skill in being able to find it.
