Impressionist & Modern Art

Upcoming Auctions & Exhibitions

Overview

In October 1958, Sotheby's pioneered the modern auction market with the Goldschmidt collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, offered in the first ever evening sale. In June 2020, Sotheby’s was the first to stage an evening sale with live-streamed bidding from Hong Kong, London and New York. Landmark auctions such as these have seen Sotheby’s break records repeatedly for the finest paintings, sculptures and works on paper from the 19th century to the post-war period.

In May 2012, Sotheby’s sold Edvard Munch’s masterpiece, The Scream, for $120 million, setting the world record for any work of art at auction at that time. In May 2019, Sotheby’s achieved the record for any Impressionist work of art with Claude Monet’s Meules selling for $111 million.

Sotheby’s global team features internationally recognised specialists whose tenure and experience are unmatched by those at any other firm. Major sales of Impressionist & Modern Art are held in February and June in London, and in May and November in New York. We also conduct sales in Hong Kong, Paris and Milan and hold online-only sales throughout the year.

In advance of our sales, we would be delighted to provide you with a free and confidential valuation.
