This coming Summer season, the key sales for Classic Design will take place in Paris and London.
The auction in Paris is dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and the Empire period, thus providing a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of French history. Curated from the esteemed collection of Pierre-Jean Chalençon, this sale brings together over 40 years of collecting. It features Imperial furniture, silverware, porcelain, sculpture, and Old Master paintings and drawings, all with prestigious provenance. The sale offers a broad portrait of this historic figure, spanning his childhood, military career, coronation at Notre-Dame, family life with his siblings, the fall of the Empire, and his exile to the island of Saint Helena.
The second auction, taking place in London, shines a spotlight on the distinguished silver collection of Baron and Baronne Bertrand de Giey. Carefully preserved at the Grand Noble Castle in East Flanders, this exquisite ensemble reflects the artistry of 16th- and 17th-century Flemish craftsmanship. Highlights include intricately designed animal-form drinking cups, encapsulating a golden era where prosperity combined with artistry to create objects of beauty, pleasure and playfulness. Alongside this silver sale, Sotheby’s London will also offer a selection of Flemish Old Master paintings from the de Giey family’s collection.
