Overview

Sotheby’s Silver Department offers a wide variety of antique and modern English and European Silver as well as American Silver from the 15th to 21st centuries. Our sales regularly feature pieces by renowned silversmiths including Paul Storr, Paul de Lamerie, Robert Garrard &Co. and Tiffany.

Our international team of experienced specialists in London, New York and Paris work closely with their colleagues throughout Sotheby’s worldwide locations to source the most desirable examples and to promote them to the world’s most likely buyers. Our specialists have presided over hundreds of auctions of the finest silver from famous collections and have achieved exceptional results for our consignors. In addition to holding the record for any piece of silver and the record for any piece of American silver, in 2010, Sotheby’s secured the auction record for English silver with the sale of the Great Wine Cistern of Thomas Wentworth for $3.8 million.

Long established as the auction house of choice for important collections of silver, Sotheby’s distinguishes itself by combining unparalleled expertise with innovative cross-marketing, outreach and thorough research. Over the last four years we have dominated the market with 58% market share and more than $51.5 million total sales for the category. This market strength has been defined by our stand-out performance in presenting single-owner collections. 2024 saw particularly strong results for silver within single-owner collections, including the Yolanda Eleta de Fierro collection, and the Alan and Simone Hartman collection of English silver and European gold boxes.
