Continuing our journey into the refined world of wine, this autumn Sotheby’s is delighted to present the 165th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, to be held at the Halles de Beaune on 16 November 2025. Taking place, as is tradition, on the third Sunday of November, this is the world’s oldest charity auction.
Founded in 1443, the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune was designed to care for the sick and offer shelter to the most destitute. Endowed with plots of vines by generous benefactors, it was in 1859 that the institution decided to offer the current vintage for public sale for the first time.
As part of Les Trois Glorieuses, this annual auction now represents the pinnacle of the calendar in Burgundy and has become a vastly important cultural phenomenon in the region, raising important funds to be invested in the medical equipment and the modernization of the hospital institution.
