Masterworks from the 19th & 20th Centuries

Eugène Louis Boudin
Bordeaux, le port et les quais
Estimate: 60,000 – 80,000 EUR
Eugène Boudin | Bordeaux, Le port et les quais
Although Boudin dedicated most of his career to painting the coast of Normandy, he also paid numerous visits to the prospering Atlantic port of Bordeaux between 1852 and 1893. The present composition depicts the busy waterfront of this thriving port along the river Garonne and demonstrates the artist's free brushwork. The low horizon line in the present work allows for the expansive, luminous sky to rise above the ships, enabling Boudin to demonstrate his virtuosic techniques, which reaffirm Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot's description of Boudin as "the king of the skies."
Léopold Survage | Paysage
Russian artist Leopold Survage arrived in Paris in 1908, drawn by the Modern French painting he had discovered in the Shchukin collection. He followed the teachings of Matisse whilst assimilating the influence of Cézanne and the Cubists with whom he exhibited in 1911. The present work, still in its period frame, was painted between 1919, when Survage returned from the South of France, and 1922 when he began to work with Sergei Diaghilev on the Ballets Russes. This work exemplifies Survage’s unique modernist vocabulary and what the poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire characterized as “a new art of painting in motion.”
Vittorio Zecchin
I Re Magi
Estimate: 40,000 – 60,000 EUR
Vittorio Zecchin | I Re Magi
Executed in 1932, I Re Magi is emblematic of the art of Vittorio Zecchin, a pivotal figure in 20th-century Italian glass art. Considered by many as the first truly Modern glass artist of Italy, Zecchin’s art is inspired by both by Ancient and Renaissance art (for instance the Byzantine mosaics of the Basilica di San Marco in the case at hand) and by the Secessionist work of Gustav Klimt. In the present work, Zecchin combined design elements typical of Murano glass and typical Byzantine aesthetics while also instilling a new modern sensitivity.
Victor Brauner
Temps du regard
Estimate: 70,000 – 100,000 EUR
Victor Brauner | Temps du regard
Never before sold at auction, Temps du regard was painted in 1960, six years before Brauner was chosen to represent France at the Venice Biennale and six years before the artist’s death. Born in Romania in 1903, Brauner settled in Paris in 1930. He is considered as a key member of the Surrealist movement, using a style and a method of painting that he never gave up. With its nesting shapes, notably the eye set inside the mouth, this oil on canvas typically exemplifies his surrealistic vocabulary.
