Cologne will become Sotheby’s new central office in Germany. The beautiful new space Sotheby’s will occupy there - a former palace with a series of palatial rooms opening onto an open terrace with sweeping vistas over the river Rhine, will provide the perfect backdrop to exhibitions of fine art and luxury items across the spectrum of Sotheby’s auction and private sales offerings. The move will establish Cologne as Sotheby’s sixth selling location in Europe, joining London, Paris, Geneva, Zurich and Milan, and as Sotheby’s new central office in Germany.
The sales hosted from Germany will span a wide spectrum of offerings – ranging from Modern & Contemporary Art, Design, Photography and Luxury categories, with three auctions confirmed for 2021 - all of which will be sourced in Germany and neighboring countries, catalogued by Sotheby’s strong team of on-the-ground specialists in Cologne, and presented for sale via Sotheby’s far-reaching online channels.
The Palais Oppenheim, Sotheby’s new home in Cologne, is a splendid villa built in 1908 on the Gustav-Heinemann-Ufer in the neighborhood of Bayenthal.
From this summer onwards, Sotheby’s will occupy the Bel Étage of the Palais, providing the perfect setting for welcoming collectors, hosting exhibitions, and valuing art and luxury items. Exhibitions over the course of the year will showcase not only the art to be offered in the Cologne sales, but also works and luxury items available for immediate purchase and private sale.
