Description
Designed as a crowned skull and crossbones applied with white enamel, embellished with rose diamonds, signed A. Codognato, maker’s mark, Italian assay marks for gold and silver.
A similar jewel is featured on the cover of 'Codognato Masterpiece' by William Middleton published by Assouline in 2023.
Attilio Codognato (1938-2023) was a fourth generation Venetian jeweller and one of the great innovators of the second half of the 20th century. He invariably infused his creations with an edgy and contemporary sensibility while always staying true to his Venetian heritage of craftsmanship. The house of Codognato was founded by Attilio’s great-grandfather Simone in 1866 in the vicinity of Venice’s emblematic Piazza San Marco. Originally only a workshop, over the generations Codognato grew out to become one of Venice most beloved jewellery destinations.
Attilio Codognato’s emblematic memento mori jewels, representing skulls and crossbones, take inspiration from the Renaissance tradition of adornments that remind the wearer that life is fleeting and therefore should be enjoyed every day to the fullest. To this tradition, Codognato added a modern and fresh twist.
