  Painted in 1897, Matisse’s Pont du Seine demonstrates the young artist’s transformation from a student of Impressionism to the Fauve master of colour. The bridge and river, executed in flattened coloured planes in a mixture of purple, cream and white hues, are bathed in a luminous pink light, enlivening the Parisian scene. The work illustrates the artist’s imaginative and emotional connection to colour, a connection which would soon evolve into the wild pigments of fauvism.

  An Anglo-Indian ivory inlaid Indian rosewood kneehole desk, Vizagapatam, third quarter 18th century.
  Estimate £120,000–180,000

  This finely decorated desk was made in the town of Vizagapatam, a port of the Coromandel Coast, famed for its ivory inlay on western forms of furniture. It would have probably been commissioned by Henry Vansittart (1732–1770) who was Governor of Bengal, from 1759 to 1764, and a collector of note.

  L.S. Lowry is often thought of as a painter of crowds, yet his true subject is less the crowd and more the loneliness and isolation that can be experienced within a mass of people. This striking painting depicts the birthplace of Prime Minister David Lloyd-George, a true portrait of suburban solitude and a reminder of the great statesman's humble origins.

  A George III mahogany small longcase regulator, John Holmes, London, circa 1775.
  Estimate £30,000–50,000

  John Holmes (c.1728-1797) was a fine and innovative maker and second cousin to John Smeaton, the civil engineer responsible for Eddystone lighthouse. The case of the current regulator, for which Holmes is perhaps best known, is small, of wonderful proportions and has very fine mouldings. It features a glass pendulum rod, an extremely unusual and almost certainly experimental component.

  Dame Laura Knight, R.A., R.W.S., The Picnic, 1912.
  Estimate £250,000–350,000

  Laura Knight and her husband Harold were central to the artistic Cornish community of Lamorna and Newlyn. This wonderful summer picnic scene captures the artistic environment in Cornwall in the pre-war years, when long hot days were spent reading poetry and painting in flower-filled meadows beside azure sea, sipping tea from porcelain cups and beer from chilled bottles carried up the hillside in wicker baskets by young men and women.

  An Iznik polychrome pottery dish, Ottoman Turkey, circa 1560-65.
  Estimate £15,000–25,000

  The orange, rather than red colour on this dish indicates that it dates from the earliest years of the use of red at Iznik, during the last years of the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent (r.1520-66). According to Smith family tradition, this bowl was acquired by Thomas Cook (1808-1892) the originator of package holidays, who founded the travel agency Thomas Cook & Son.

  Sir Joshua Reynolds P.R.A., Portrait of Henry Vansittart (1732-1770), Governor of Bengal, 1753.
  Estimate £60,000–80,000

  Henry Vansittart’s distinguished career in India began at the young age of thirteen, when he joined the East India Company as a writer. By the age of twenty-seven, he was appointed Governor of Bengal. Vansittart is here portrayed in 1753 by Reynolds, on the first of the only two trips that he would ever take back to England.

  A Victorian mahogany giant carriage timepiece, Vulliamy No.1594, London, dated 1843.
  Estimate £25,000–35,000

  This exceptional timepiece was made by royal clockmaker Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy (1780-1854), the grandson of Swiss clockmaker Justin Vulliamy. It is of the highest quality throughout and may well have been a special commission or even an exhibition piece.

  Circle of Alessandro Allori, Portrait of Count Salviati, probably Alamanno Salviati (1510-71).
  Estimate £30,000–40,000

  The sitter of this portrait, Count Alamanno Salviati (1510-71), commissioned Alessandro Allori, Johannes Stradanus and other members of Bronzino's workshop to enlarge and embellish the Villa Salviati, his family home just outside Florence. Arthur Vansittart (1807-59) acquired the Villa and its contents in 1844.

  Albert Marquet, Les Cabanes, 1923.
  Estimate £30,000–50,000

  In 1923, Albert Marquet painted Les Cabanes, a group of houses on stilts, home to brickyard workers who made their living in a factory nearby. Rendered in a wonderful array of brushstrokes, each laden with pigment, there is a spontaneity to the composition which captures the tranquil scene of the red-roofed huts in the hazy Mediterranean heat. Unlike his fellow fauves – Vlaminck, Derain and Matisse – Marquet’s palette remained resolutely tied to the real world, inspired solely by the dazzling colour effects he discovered in his nuanced observations of natural light.
