On 8 November, Dr. David Anfam – celebrated author, curator and art historian – joined Sotheby’s for Metamorphosis & Modernism – a discussion of five milestone artworks by Willem de Kooning. Courtney Kremers, Vice President of Contemporary Art, welcomed attendees to the special night, hosted with Sotheby’s International Realty. Guests were all ears as Anfam delved into the remarkable evolution of de Kooning’s aesthetic, touching on influences from Pieter Bruegel to Hieronymus Bosch. De Kooning’s unique ability, Anfam said, was to portray “the body in trial, the body in motion,” creating artworks that seemed to be alive. “Being this close to these five paintings, seeing them in the flesh, ”Anfam remarked, “it’s very, very special.”
