  This silver model ‘made entirely by hand’, and commissioned by the Bond Street Jeweller, Asprey & Co Ltd., is an accurate copy of the vessel named after Sir Winston Churchill and built under the patronage of The Duke of Edinburgh. The sea-going vessel was commissioned in 1964 and launched in 1966, a year after the death of Sir Winston. It was built to compete in The Tall Ships race and deliberately constructed to include all the main types of sail.

  Flowers and grasses are elegantly represented in an imaginary garden against a rich abstract gold-leaf ground. Similar garden scenes are often associated with an emerging interest in natural and botanical science amongst the ruling class of the 17th century. A similar depiction of flowers and grasses with Inen seal appears on the magnificent Sokazufusuma, a set of four sliding doors in the Kyoto National Museum (accession number: 13307).
