  Untitled (Bolego) is an exceptional example from one of Rudolf Stingel’s most iconic series of self-portraits in which the artist challenges the genres of and borders separating painting and photography. Using a photograph as his source material, Stingel paints a moment of profound self-reflection on the occasion of his birthday. Despite the festive props of martini and birthday cake, the artist appears melancholy; the existentialist dread depicted places the artist in the company of a long line of artists coming to terms with their mortality, including Albrecht Dürer, Vincent van Gogh, and Edvard Munch.
