About the Museum

Housed in one of Rotterdam's historical monuments, the Wereldmuseum offers a beautiful view of the Maas River. The building opened its doors in 1851 as the Royal Yacht Club of Prince Hendrik, the brother of King Willem III. Its decorative facade is graced with many maritime details; architect A. N. Godefroy was inspired by Haussmann's Grands Boulevards in Paris. Asia and Oceania are the two cultural areas for which this museum holds internationally acclaimed permanent collections. It proudly combines these historic collections of aesthetically and spiritually valuable artifacts with a selection of objects from private collections that are typically inaccessible to a museum audience. From 7 November 2013, an exhibition will feature private collections from three countries for the first time: the holdings of Van Bussel, VanderStraete and Conru, all three of whom spent a lifetime collecting outstanding art from Oceania.
