T he Private Sales team at Sotheby’s is proud to present a unique selection of Contemporary and Modern works of art available for immediate purchase. This impactful group consists of works by British legends such as Gilbert and George and Banksy as well as new and exciting artists to the secondary market; Lincoln Townley and STIK. Executed within the last two years, Lincoln Townley’s works from the series Bankers were completed in response to the artist’s previous job in nightclubs where the artist entertained high flyers from the industry in a seedy world of drugs and London’s nightlife. Townley, who is many years sober now, paints in fevered passion akin to Francis Bacon, yet the details of each face are erased to vibrant anonymity. Townley has had an explosive arrival at the auction market with a Banker painting selling for ten times it’s high estimate. Another work by the artist will be sold in the November Day Sale in New York as part of the unprecedented Fall season of sales. Gilbert and George’s Beardesy painting from 2016 is a playful yet haunting self-portrait of the artistic duo featured as part of the Beard Painting series. This series presents the artist’s wearing a variety of surreal objects and materials as beards with eerie and intense stares from their faces. The exhibition also features stunning works on paper by Frank Auerbach, Tracey Emin and Sean Scully and a selection of Lynn Chadwick's sculptural bronze candelabras from the Willer Gallery.
