Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively dirty, and the varnish is relatively discoloured. There is an old, horizontal fold or seam which runs the length of the canvas approx. 13 cm. from the upper margin. There is minor frame abrasion along all four edges with associated retouching. The paint surface shows evidence of wear throughout, and there are discoloured retouchings throughout, notably in the upper left and right corners, the clouds, and to a repaired horizontal tear approx. 13 cm. long above Actaeon, as well as the flesh tones of the figures, notably Acateon's proper left bicep, and Diana's proper left shoulder blade. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the extensive campaign of retouching, and reveals further retouchings throughout the darker pigments of the trees, foreground, and dogs. In overall moderate condition.
