This 2011 Silk Road Uncommon Sat is tied to the infamous darknet market Silk Road, which was the world’s first marketplace where bitcoin was used as the base currency. In 2013, its creator’s identity was uncovered, and the then-young man Ross Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison even though he was a first-time offender with no violent charges brought against him. Law enforcement also seized thousands of bitcoins from the site, 3,000 of which it auctioned in 2014. This lot of 3,000 BTC acquired at auction by VC investor Tim Draper are in circulation today and known as "Silk Road sats" –– a unique piece of bitcoin history. Out of the billions of sats that fall into this category, only 829 are also uncommon sats (the first sat of a bitcoin block). The sat being auctioned in this lot is even more special, as it was mined in the year that Silk Road was founded –– 2011. To date, no Silk Road Uncommon sat has ever been inscribed on.
