  Giacometti started making decorative objects in 1929. At the beginning it was a means of creating income while he continued his work as a sculptor. His more serious involvement with the decorative arts grew out of his encounter with Jean–Michel Frank, with whom he worked regularly throughout the 1930s.

  Shiro Kuramata
  Miss Blanche chair, designed in 1988
  Estimate €220,000–280,000

  Named for the famous Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire, Shiro Kuramata's iconic Miss Blanche armchair was first exhibited at the KAGU exhibition, held during the Tokyo Designer's Week at Axis Gallery Annex in 1988. Only 56 models of Miss Blanche were produced. Versions of the chair are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Vitra Design Museum.

  Silex armchair, circa 1905

  Conceived in 1904 for the château de la Cheyrelle, the Silex series was manufactured from 1905. While being a stylistic innovation for Serrurier–Bovy, this model also epitomizes his avant–gardism. Determined to find solutions adapted to his times, the whole structure lies on simple screws.
