S otheby's Belgium is pleased to present a selling exhibition of works by Stephan Vanfleteren, one of Belgium’s most famous and important photographers. Starting out as a photojournalist in the 1990s, Vanfleteren is primarily known for his penetrating black and white portraits of people from all walks of life, from artists, actors and sportsmen, to surfers and fishermen. From the beginning of the new Millennium, Vanfleteren started to focus on that which is on the verge of disappearing, creating with painstaking attention to detail, a unique visual archive of his homeland and of his fellow Belgians. His oeuvre is very diverse, ranging from documentary, to artistic and personal pictures. From street photography in world cities, storefront façades and the mystical landscapes of the Atlantic Wall, to still lifes and intense portraits, Vanfleteren covers a broad range of subjects, which he always approaches in his unique and inimitable style.
For this special occasion and unique exhibition, Sotheby’s is collaborating with Gallery FIFTY ONE, a gallery founded in 2000 in Antwerp, which specializes in fine art photography and works on paper. The gallery represents Vanfleteren’s work among other 20th and 21st century photographers.
