Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.
The thin panels are flat and uncradled - the paint surface is stable with very dirty and discoloured surfaces and varnish. The varnish has blanched, giving the paintings a 'washed-out' appearance - and a distinctive craquelure has developed throughout both pictures.
There appears, under ultra violet light, to be relatively little intervention at all - the varnish (very yellowed) has pulled apart in parts, or been worn off in parts, exposing the blue of the sky pigments below, which is what gives the sky its strange appearance.
The paintings will respond well to cleaning.
Offered framed as a pair in carved wood and gesso gold painted frames in fair condition.
