Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined. The paint surface is secure and stable with a clear and even varnish. There is a degree of wear visible throughout the canvas, but no new major damages are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals a band of retouching along the upper margin that conceals some past frame abrasion. There are further retouches and small repairs scattered throughout mostly to mask the effect of the wear and others through the darker tones. The most concentrated areas of these retouchings are in the face of the Magdalene and the Baptist and in the legs of Christ. There is an old restored damage with associated retouching in the background of the upper right of the canvas, and although hard to make out it seems reasonable to assume that there is a wash strengthening throughout the dark sky in the upper right quadrant.

Offered in a modern carved black frame with gilt sight edge in good condition.
