Catalogue Note

It has been suggested that Suzani embroideries with leaf trellises enclosing flower-heads are related to eighteenth and nineteenth-century Khorossan garden rugs, see Embroidered Flowers from Thrace to Tartary, London, 1981, pl. 22. More so than lot 2 in this sale, the field design of which is also dominated by a leaf trellis, the present embroidery is particularly reminiscent of garden carpets due to the inclusion of a variety of flowering shrubs. For a similar embroidery, see Sotheby’s New York, April 12, 1995, lot 36.
