From Paris to New York through London, STYLE auctions are now not-to-miss events for amateur collectors of decorative arts from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century. From May 28 until June 4, Sotheby’s France will offer a new online edition of STYLE.
Among a wide array of furniture and works of art, the sale will feature several ensembles selected from Parisian and European private collections, including a table by Claude-Charles Saunier, a Chinese lacquer commode by Jacques Dubois, several Sèvres porcelain pieces, as well as an exceptional ensemble of 27 views of interiors, from the 19th and 20th centuries, gathered by a passionate collector, including some of the most well-known décors of the period, such as the castles of Sagan and Groussay.
This sale will also offer silver works and gold boxes made between the 16th and the 20th century.
Can any other object better illustrate the famous 18th century art of living than these delicate gold boxes? They were made not only to keep tobacco for personal use but also as a marker of social rank, by personal commission or as a gift from a King. We have here two very different but magnificent examples made by the two best Parisian boxmakers, Drais and Ducrollay, the first in agate chased with a butterfly on the cover, the second with Chinese lacquer panels.
The sale also features an exceptional ensemble of 27 views of interiors from the 19th and 20th centuries, gathered by a passionate collector. Views of interiors flourished as an independent genre in the early decades of the 19th century: these indoor counterpoints of vedute and topographical paintings combine charm and precision and range from palaces to bourgeois interiors. This collection includes some of the most well-known décors of the period, such as the castles of Sagan and Groussay.
