Description
Boat House H Grossman Rye Whiskey NV
Ullage: high shoulder
This bottle is a rare and pristine example of what was once the predominant method of selling whiskey: Grocers, who often doubled as wine and spirits merchants, would buy whiskey in bulk from distilleries, then package it in their own bottles. In this case, the grocer is H. Grossman, a firm in Cincinnati; the source of the rye whiskey inside is unknown. What makes this bottle even more curious is its size and closure: Until the end of the 19th century, grocers, including H. Grossman, usually sold whiskey in large earthenware jugs. But as elements of the whiskey industry started to emphasize quality and “purity” of their product, enterprising grocers quickly followed suit, putting their whiskey into smaller glass bottles with tamperproof closures, like this one.
