WHELER, GEORGE
A journey into Greece... in company of Dr Spon of Lyons. London: for Cademan, Kettlewell and Churchill, 1682
FIRST EDITION, folio (295 x 190mm.), folding engraved map, 5 engraved plates (one of which is sometimes divided and bound as 3 separate plates), engraved illustrations and maps in text, modern morocco
This work, which remained the standard English book on Greece for many years, is divided into six sections: I. A voyage from Venice to Constantinople; II. An account of Constantinople and the adjacent places; III. A voyage through lesser Asia; IV. A voyage from Zant through several parts of Greece to Athens; V. An account of Athens; VI. Several journeys from Athens, into Attica, Corinth, Boeotia, &c. Wheler was accompanied by the archaeologist Jacob Spon who published his account of the journey in 1678. It was only when Wheler thought a translation of Spon's work was about to be made that he decided to publish his own version.
