8vo (5 x 7 5/8 in.; 130 x 193 mm). Half-title, frontispiece portrait of the poet by his father John Butler, central ornament to title-page; some foxing to title-page.
Yeats. Full red buckram over bevelled boards, spine gilt lettered; spine sunned, some foxing to endleaves and fore-edge. In custom blue and cream colored linen clamshell case.
First edition, number 79 of 110 copies, the Dowden copy
John Dowden was a prominent critic, curate at Sligo during the Yeats's youth, and was made Bishop of Edinburgh in 1897. John and his brother Edward, Irish critic and poet, were close friends of John Butler Yeats during the poet’s childhood. John, an early supporter of W.B. Yeats, subscribed to 12 copies of his second book, The Wanderings of Oisin.
