Eustathius
Παρεκβολαι εις την Ομηρου Ιλιαδα και Οδυσσειαν... Eustathii archiepiscopi Thessalonicae, in Homeri Iliadis et Odysseae libros παρεκβολαι. Basel: (Hieronymus Froben and Nikolaus Episcopius), 1560 (1559)
2 volumes bound in 3, folio (317 x 210mm.), woodcut device on title-page and at the end of the Iliad, woodcut initials and headpieces, manuscript motto "permitte Divis caetera" at end of each volume with the initials BC, old smooth calf with later gilt wreath centrepiece in period style, spine gilt in compartments, old inscriptions on title-pages crossed through, final leaf of Odyssey torn and repaired, bindings rubbed and stained with some repairs to spine ends and edges, rebacked with period gilt tooling and new endpapers, small adhesive labels to spines
The extensive commentary of Eustathius, accompanied by the text of Homer, was first printed by Antonio Blado in Rome in 1542-1550. It was compiled in the twelfth century from earlier commentators, and demonstrates Eustathius's wide reading; many of the works he quotes from and some variant readings would be otherwise unknown.
