The evening of 11 July on Microsoft’s sprawling campus, Sotheby’s Seattle and the Seattle Art Fair cohosted a dynamic evening on the relationship between collecting and technology. Moderated by Sotheby’s Lucian Simmons, the conversation covered technology’s influences on art making, viewing and collecting and brought together three minds working at this intersection. Dylan Farnum from the Walla Walla Foundry, the world’s largest contemporary art foundry, elucidated state-of-the-art technology’s role in fabricating previously impossible large-scale sculptures. “Technology is breaking down boundaries of what it means to be a creator, an influencer, a participant and a trader of art,” said David Galperin, Sotheby’s Assistant Vice President of Contemporary Art, while considering social media’s role in the art world. Alexandre Catsicas, CEO of Artmyn, highlighted the myriad possibilities technology creates for experiencing artworks, new and old alike. Simmons succinctly captured the night’s sentiments concluding, “Digital technology helps broadcast an artist’s voice and helps collectors to find that voice.” Click ahead for highlights from the forward-thinking event.
