T he Contemporary and Modern Discoveries auctions bring together diverse artworks of various media, regions and eras from each of Sotheby’s Fine Art Departments in an exciting sale context. We are pleased to present the third instance of our pioneering cross-category sale series this September.
This edition of Contemporary Discoveries features paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures spanning from the 1960’s to today. Highlights include an exciting group of color-forward paintings by John McLaughlin, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Frank Bowling, and Theodoros Stamos alongside prime examples of geometric abstraction by François Morellet, Sarah Morris, and Sol Lewitt and works by Pop Art icons like Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and Jim Dine. Special attention is also paid to showcasing the emerging artists of today including Jordy Kerwick, Isshaq Ismail, Fika Leon, and Super Future Kid.
The sale includes a selection of art, editions, and experiences generously donated by artists, gallerists, and publishers to benefit Instituto Terra, the nonprofit environmental organization co-founded by Sebastião Salgado and Lélia Wanick Salgado. Proceeds from the sale of these lots will ensure the organization can continue its work planting millions of trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest and educating farmers, public officials and local communities about the importance of protecting this delicate ecosystem.
