Exceptional Results for Contemporary Art
Sotheby’s is leading the market with an innovative strategy that accurately reflects the evolving taste of collectors worldwide by becoming the first major auction house to formally integrate Latin American Art into our Global Fine Art auctions. In recent seasons, we have demonstrated key financial advantages to this approach that have consistently achieved exceptional results for our consignors.
This strategy engages an increasingly broad group of clients, many of whom collect works across categories to add to their collections. Since this integration in 2017, Sotheby’s has set new world auction records for more than 20 of the most important modern and contemporary artists in the category including Wifredo Lam, Remedios Varo, Joaquín Torres-García, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Mario Carreño, Carmen Herrera, and Olga de Amaral. We have engaged over 580 bidders from 51 countries to compete for Latin American Art in our Global Fine Art sales. Of these bidders, 61% were new bidders to the Latin American Art category.
Every season, our dedicated Latin American Art specialists spearhead a global commitment to maximizing the visibility of the category within our marquee and mid-season New York sales, as well as within our biannual Evening and Day Sales in London, Paris, Milan, and Hong Kong. Together with our European, Asian, and Latin American specialists and executives, they comprise the world’s largest salesforce of Latin American Art.
Since the integration of the category, Sotheby’s has continued to offer outstanding paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Joaquín Torres-García, Wifredo Lam, Matta, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Alice Rahon, Francisco Toledo, Fernando Botero, Claudio Bravo, Fernando de Szyszlo, Mario Carreño, Mariano Rodríguez, Armando Reverón, Angel Zárraga,Emilio Pettoruti, Cândido Portinari, Miguel Covarrubias, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, Antonio Dias, Julio Le Parc, Jorge Eielson, Almir Mavignier, León Ferrari, Sarah Grilo, Oswaldo Guayasamín, Ricardo Martínez, Sandú Darié, Gego, Olga de Amaral, Loló Soldevilla, Mercedes Pardo, Gerd Leufert, Lygia Clark, Mira Schendel, Luis Tomasello, Oswaldo Vigas, and more.
