Remedios Varo, Mujer lechuza volando
Owls are a personal favorite (I collect images of owls myself!); they are also recurring characters in Remedios Varo's pantheon of the fantastical, appearing as messengers between terrestrial and spirit realms or even as stand-ins for the artist herself. Here, Varo painstakingly painted this delicate creature on the reverse of a piece of glass in a technique called verre églomisé, which lends it a gleaming, otherworldly quality that is breathtaking.

Fernando Botero, Variaciones sobre Cézanne Juicy, sensual, yet architectonically harmonious, Fernando Botero’s monumental Variaciones sobre Cézanne is a crowning achievement from one of the artist’s most celebrated series. Charmingly bruised apples, homely vases and acid-toned table-settings populate his Pop-inflected reimaginings of the Impressionist and Old Master paintings he eagerly studied as a young artist in Europe during the 1950s. Although the artist clearly references Cézanne, he revises the master's composition with his characteristic sly humor. He abandons the Provençal tablecloth of Cézanne's backdrop to focus on the stark white of the cloth; prim bone china becomes FiestaWare, and each individual apple and orange among the bevy of fruit is so inflated they seem poised to roll off of the tablecloth and into the lap of the observer. Crucially, Botero adds the easel at the far foreground of the painting, transforming the work from a reimagining of a composition to a portrait of the artist's studio itself. View Lot
