Newest Hermès Bag: Kelly Desordre is an Instant Hit
The Kelly en Desordre was first seen on the runway during the Hermès Women's Autumn- Winter 2022 collection. The Kelly bag retails for about $12,000 in the US and has been an instant hit with collectors. Early pricing at auction is over 3x the retail price as very bags have reached the secondary market. It's unique double sided design has two different angled flaps both with one sangle and iconic turn lock. One flap opens to the main compartment while the other flap opens to a small pouch. The shoulder strap is attached and does not come with a lock or keys. The new Kelly Desordre is a modern take on the Vintage Mini Kelly 20 shoulder bag that also had an attached shoulder strap.
Pros and Cons of the Kelly en Desordre
There are many pros of the new Kelly Desordre. While fashion editors continue to push big bags are back, Hermès collectors are still paying higher premiums for mini bags. The Kelly en Desordre is 20 centimeter size, the same wide as the popular Hermès Mini Kelly. The should strap is a great length and the interior compartment is more practical than the Mini Kelly due to the wider depth. One con that could hurt it's long term appeal is the torn lock catch or rub against clothing or skin.
Kelly en Desordre Auction Demand
The Kelly Desordre 20 has appeared a few auctions in 2023. Due to strong collector demand, the newest Kelly bag has been selling for between $40,000-$45,000 or over 3x the retail price. We anticipate secondary market prices for the Kelly Desordre will peak in the first half of 2023 as supply remains low relative to collector demand. The question we can't answer yet is how long will this Hermès bag sell at such a high premium relative to retail. The "store fresh" condition Hermès Mini Kelly and Birkin 25 in leather continue to sell at nearly 3x retail. We believe leather Birkin 25 bags in "store fresh" condition and in neutral or pale pastel colors with date stamps from the last 18-24 months will continue to sell at close to 3x retail for the foreseeable future. We are less certain about the premium for the leather Mini Kelly 20.
More Colors Coming to Auction
Sotheby's June auction in New York will feature a Vert Fizz Kelly Desordre and a Black Kelly Desordre. We anticipate competitive bidding for both and prices to remain around $40,000-$45,000. As more Kelly Desordre bags become available we believe pricing could trend lower in 2023 and stabilize closer to $30,000-35,000 in early 2024. The exact timing is difficult to predict and will largely be driven by the popularity versus demand.
