Happy Together: K11 and Sotheby’s Unveil Highlights of Fall Auctions

T he Sotheby’s Hong Kong Fall Auctions preview at K11 MUSEA officially kicks off this week, opening to the public on Saturday, 18 September. The four-day showcase will take place at a world-class cultural-retail destination, known as the ‘Silicon Valley of Culture’ in Hong Kong. In line with K11 Group’s mission to promote a diverse variety of art and cultural experiences, with developments that foster vibrant creative hubs for the community.

K11 MUSEA visitors will have the chance to get a glimpse ahead of Sotheby’s highly anticipated Hong Kong auctions in September and October.

A Modern Art Collaboration with Wong Kar Wai

The art world was abuzz last week when revered auteur Wong Kar Wai and Sotheby’s Modern Art announced plans to debut the directors first ever NFT creation from never-before-seen footage of his masterpiece ‘In The Mood For Love’. Curator, collector, and artist – Wong Kar Wai has also selected 30 collectibles to be sold in the the dedicated auction "Happy Together | WKW x Jet Tone Films 30th Anniversary". The exhibition at K11 MUSEA will be the first time the public will see first-hand the iconic "Heartbreak Tango – Yellow Jacket" worn by charismatic pop icon Leslie Cheung in ‘Happy Together’ (1997). The leather jacket is of personal significance to the director and will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in October.

Showcasing Modern and Contemporary Masters

For four days, highlights from Wong Kar Wai’s Jet Tone Archive will be joined by an array of modern and contemporary art by Asian and Western masters including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Lin Fengmian, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Bernard Buffet, Georges Mathieu, Fernando Zobel, Kazuo Shiraga, George Condo and Yoshitomo Nara, plus exciting works by market darlings Louis Fratino, Joel Mesler and Avery Singer.

Visitors won’t want to miss Auguste Rodin's sculpture Napoléon Enveloppé dans Son Réve, one of the rarest and most legendary marble masterpieces by Rodin to be ever offered at auction. In contemporary art, the exuberant work Yougen by Kazuo Shiraga represents a dynamic example of the artist’s gestural, action-based painting. Yougen is executed in beastly lacerations of red, purple and blue, one of the most charged, exhilarating palettes from the artist’s highly acclaimed foot-painting lexicon.

Into the World of Luxury

K11 MUSEA is a fitting destination to witness the convergence of fine art and the world of luxury – with highlights from the jewellery, watches, sneakers and handbags sales to go on display. A magnificent 177.51 carat Harry Winston diamond necklace, featured in the upcoming Diamonds: The Dazzling ∞ sale on 24 September, will be auctioned with cryptocurrency as an accepted method of payment. Other highlights include a brand-new platinum and diamond-set Patek Philippe reference 5307, along with an Hermès Alligator Birkin Touch 30 and an Hermès Mini Picnic Kelly plus 20 luxury handbags in a variety of rare materials, sizes and colours.

Sotheby's First Sneaker Sale in Asia

Unveiling at the exhibition will be an unreleased sample of the Nike Dunk SB Low “Yellow Lobster” from the Boston-inspired series, ushering in Sotheby’s first sneaker sale in Asia from 7 to 21 October. Titled Cult Canvas, the online sale series is curated by Ryan Chang, founder of Applied Arts [@applied.arts.nyc] – a media company that celebrates sneakers as fine art objects.
