“‘Coming Forth by Day’ is a common English translation of the ancient Egyptian term ‘peret em hru’, which refers to the Book of the Dead. It's a collection of funerary texts containing spells, prayers, and incantations designed to guide the deceased through the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, and into the afterlife. The term emphasizes the hope of the deceased to return from the afterlife by day.

This is the first in a series of paintings inspired by my painting trip with Daniel Sprick. We painted out of doors in the heat of the desert every day, often for 8-10 hours straight. Caravans of camels walked the street as the sand of the desert blew into our paintings. I studied compositions of the legendary Sphinx from a nearby rooftop and walked Giza plateau with sketchbook in hand. After returning to my studio in Denver, I compiled my studies into this piece.” – Tanner Steed
