“Painting hellebores annually has become a personal ritual for reflecting on change and the coming year. When these resilient perennials emerge as winter shifts into spring, they become a hopeful signal that change is coming; they are a light in the darkness. I painted Harbingers fully from life and watched closely as the buds of my subjects opened and bent down as if conversing with or watching over the others around them. Some faded moodily and dropped their stamens while new buds burst through the soil. In the same way I would approach a portrait painting, I strove to capture hellebores’ distinct character traits and portray them in a way that evoked their lively movements. When the painting was complete, I planted the hellebores into my family’s garden with the hope they will bloom again next spring.” – Erica Arcudi
