The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Jacob van Ruisdael Landscape with cottage Oil on canvas, in 19/20th C gilt wood frame The original canvas is lined and the lining is stable and secure, the canvas having good tension.

The paint layer is in a very good preserved state; subtle painterly textures and impasted highlights are in a good original condition. The paint layer is slightly raised in some areas, notable in raking light, but is secure. There is evidence of minor historic flaked loss to the sky, the loss mostly follows horizontal shrinkage cracking. Some of these have been retouched out, the restoration has discoloured. There is some minor restoration to mitigate loss to the smoke from the chimney and, unnecessarily, to reduce natural dark passages in the foreground river bank. Tonal and chromatic values are retained and removal of a discoloured varnish would be very beneficial, reintroducing subtle tonal nuances.
