I cicles and earrings, twinkling lights and cocktail rings – there’s nothing like jewelry for the holidays. Here, Sotheby’s jewelry specialist Vivian Chen selects some of her favorite winter gems and jewels, whether it’s a gift for a loved one or yourself.
Engagement Rings
“The holidays are a popular time to get engaged. We have a large selection of engagement rings from vintage to contemporary, including traditional white diamonds in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Sapphires and rubies are wonderful options as well, although I’d advise against softer stones for something that will get a lot of everyday wear. We have some beautiful colored stones in ballerina and bombé settings that can really cater to unique tastes. Colored diamonds are a great option for someone who wants something unique and eye-catching.”
Grand Gestures
“There’s something extraordinary about gemstones and precious metals. Historically they were associated with the divine. Gems are shiny, colorful and brilliant; they catch the eye and cause an immediate reaction. By its very nature, jewelry is a bold statement. But if you want to really be wowed by someone, throw subtlety out the window and find a mesmerizing tiara or chunky cocktail ring. Or look for big, beautiful stones in a simple necklace or earring setting. There’s just something so visually arresting about a gem that is simply massive or that possesses an intense color.”
Cocktail Attire
“Go big and go sparkly! During the holidays it’s nice to have something eye-catching that can’t necessarily be worn year-round. You can be festive without going all in on green and red gemstones – although, ’tis certainly the season for that as well! Think, a fun pair of fleurette earrings set with colored diamonds or a whimsical pair of cuff links. It’s an opportunity to go beyond the classic staples and instead break out those pieces with extra character.”
Stocking Stuffers
“I would love to find a vintage pin in my stocking – we have some delightful animal brooches. But this is also an occasion to gift something classic, perhaps a tennis bracelet or a pair of diamond studs. There’s a reason brands like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels are considered timeless – they have truly exceptional craftsmanship.”
