275th Anniversary
Sotheby’s has united collectors with word-class works of art since 1744, and in 2019 we celebrated our 275th anniversary by looking back at the landmark moments and achievements that defined us over the centuries.
Captivating Personalities
From iconic fashion designer Marc Jacobs to culinary genius Massimo Bottura, in 2019 Sotheby’s sat down with some of the most interesting people in the art world. In our Webby Award-winning series A Life Less Ordinary, travel from Robert Chang’s eccentric palace in Hong Kong to Stellene Volandes’ office perched above Central Park to learn about Jewels, Ceramics, Contemporary Art and more.
Historic Moments
· Celebrations of human achievement were on offer in 2019, with both the Manifesto that revived the modern Olympic Games and the original recording of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing coming across the auction block.
Myths and Memories
The objects we sell often remind us of our shared history and the stories that continue to inspire new generations of artists. Whether a mysterious, medieval chess piece discovered off the coast of Scotland or an emotional reminder of the joy of childhood games, stories are at the core of every object that passes through the doors of Sotheby’s.
New Markets
Finally, as we head into a new decade we celebrate one of the newest markets sold at Sotheby’s – Spirits! Sotheby’s specialist Jonny Fowle offers expert guidance for those seeking to build the ultimate whisky collection, with examples from the most comprehensive whisky catalogue ever offered at auction.
